An apple a day…or maybe twenty?

The old motherly saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away,” may be more important than ever! Many people will not think twice about eating a burger, fries and a soft drink for a meal. That meal contains at least 1,500 or more calories.

For a calorie-to-calorie comparison, say you still want to eat a 1,500-calorie lunch but instead of the burger, fries and soft drink, you chose to eat the equivalent in apples. What a great idea, but wouldn’t you gain just as much weight if you ate 1,500 calories in apples? Probably so, but there is one small catch. That catch is that 1,500 calories in apples is about twenty apples! Yes, roughly nineteen more than I can eat in one session. How about you? Kind of sounds like a YouTube video food challenge. So next time you reach for a burger, fries and a soft drink, imagine eating 20 apples; it might give you pause and make you re-consider.
